A Woman and Her Cintiq

21 Comments on A Woman and Her Cintiq

Oh, dear blog of mine.

How I have neglected thee.

Yes, I’m kinda busy with that ‘work thing’ and all. (Damn that rent and eating thing!) But I figured something out. Like in my Mini Critiques where I’d rather record my feedback to an MP3 than write it out, I’m going to do the same here. Better some kind of post than no post, right?

Plus, you get to mock me in the process.

So I present to you: a new video post!

And look! I have another stupid expression on my face. *sigh*

It’s kind of long (almost ten minutes) so those of you with slow internet connections should go clean your toilet (you know you need to)Β and come back when it’s cued up.

I talk of working on Kid vs Kat, the new (oooo…ahhh) Cintiq I have and my own stupidity.

Oh, and those of you on the fabulous Storyboard Club Mailing List (see sidebar) will be getting your own little video early next week in the newsletter thingy. No, it won’t be posted on the blog. Sorry!

See? Membership has its privileges.

Without further ado…click play and enjoy! (If you are in a reader, click through to the blog to check it out.)

Ah those funny expressions randomly captured by the Vimeo ! ;P

Great vid on organization and getting to see the awesome Cintiq in action! As for productivity, I think i’ll need to get me a simple file folder thingie like you have before i can invest in one of those Wacom beauties..
Those seconds turned-minutes-turned-hours of shuffling to find the right ref materials and what not can sure add up!

O no, the delete key! I’ve had those brain hiccups too on my tablet. Once, I was starting to drive myself mad trying to figure out why the cursor was all odd…i was getting so angry at the screen, didn’t occur to look down at my hand to realize that was holding the stylus upside down~ πŸ˜€

Lookin forward to seeing more “Kid vs Kat” when things get less hushhush!

    Karen,

I am completely jealous. I want a Cintiq!

Very, very neat tool. Now I just have to come up with a reason, a space for it, and a few little dollars…

Nice vid. Oh, and good work on the copyright-coverups. LOL.

    Regards,

    Kelly

@ Chris – You have to stay in a static smile for the whole video to even try to get a decent screen grab! I give up.

Yes, organize yourself man! It’s amazing how much time you save when you’re not hunting around for stuff. I know exactly where to find everything. Those vertical ones like I showed are a real space-saver too.

And I’m glad to hear I’m not the only one with ‘tablet challenges’. πŸ™‚

@ Kelly – Yes, it’s pretty freakin’ awesome, I must say. I think it was worth finally taking the plunge. And if you have space for a monitor, you should have space for the Cintiq.

    Maybe you can ask Santa?

And my ‘copyright cover-up technique’ is totally copyrighted! πŸ˜‰

Hi Karen. Great to SEE you – love the video blog post! Thanks for showing your Cintiq. I’m thinking of getting one for doing my SHIFT-IT templates with … hook up with webcam. When you are out from under the crunch of this project, would love to book a few hours of consulting time with you to help me figure out my Merkley Map dilemma. Come over and meet with you in Vancouver. πŸ™‚

  5. Friar

Oooh, I WANT one of those!!!

    But I saw the price..Ouch!

Hmmm… buy a Cinti-Cinq? Or have money left over for vacation next summer?

(Geez. I need to make more money!)

  6. Karen J Lloyd Post author

@ Christina – Thanks for dropping by! All of that sounds awesome. I’d love to see you here and help you out. We’ll be in touch. πŸ™‚

@ Friar – “Ouch” is right! If it wasn’t for this contract I’d still be Cintiq-less.

There is a 12 inch model though. Depending on someone’s needs, it could totally do the job too. The Cintiq 12WX. It’s about half the price of the one I have. Still a little steep though.

But if it’s for your job (like me), it’ll eventually pay for itself. πŸ™‚

ooooooo…sexy, the Cintiq that is. I have been using one at work for about a year now for doing concept art, I love it! You’ve made a excellent investment.

    Hope your doing well,
    Quinn

  8. Karen J Lloyd Post author

    Don’t worry… I’d never assume I was the sexy one. πŸ˜‰

Quinn! How you doing? I saw you were doing concept work. Awesome!

I think it’s a good investment too. I hope. They seem to last a long time too, which is nice to know.

    Nice to see you, guy!

I’ve been hit with the “work” bug also, hooray for contract extensions, ala “Doomsday”

Thanks for putting up another video, I noticed Christmas came early for you πŸ™‚ with that brand spanking new Cintiq. I’d get a tablet pc, but the ones currently in the market just aren’t as attractive. Break’s over, ciao.

  10. Ivan

    Cool vid. Do more!

When I was watching this, it gets me thinking that you should do one of those time-lapse video, to show how “long” it takes to do a storyboard.

  11. Nick

    Karen,

It’s been great following you over the last year. The video blog is a nice addition the the text blog. Keep the videos coming!

    Thanks again!
    Nick

PS – I liked the “secret” storyboard club video. Any little tips that you can spare a minute or two to demonstrate are greatly appreciated!

  12. Karen J Lloyd Post author

@ Rufin – Yes, I guess this was my Christmas present to myself…for the next decade! I’ve done the tablet thing too but there’s nothing like drawing right on the screen. Back to work!

@ Ivan – I *will* do more! Having trouble trying to write anything these days.

Ha! That time lapse would be scary. Sweat pants, pony tail and bags under the eyes. Yowza!

@ Nick – Glad you’re liking the videos. I rather enjoy making them (I’m a ham at heart.) And the Cintiq makes quick little videos like the ‘secret’ one so easy! You’re very welcome. πŸ™‚

  13. Debi

Just dropping in to say that I love the new video blog and that I have Cintiq envy!!! I wantssss it my precioussssss!!

Also, me thinks the poor dudes with slow internet access were not able to hear your apology for the video…since it was on the video! Oh irony, I love thee. Hehe

  14. Karen J Lloyd Post author

    DEBI !!!

How are you darlin’? Long time. πŸ™‚

I’d let you touch my Cintiq. Really I would. (But you’d have to make the “oooo” sounds.)

Yes, I suppose I should have apologized in the *actual post* and not video, huh? Right. It was supposed to be ironic.

    *cue Alanis Morisette*

  15. Debi

Nooo!! Not The Morisette!!! Anything but that!!!

I can touch the Cintiq?! Really!? Will you fly me up to you? πŸ˜‰ I’ll make the “oooo” sounds as requested! And I promise not to get too much drool on it.

Sorry I haven’t been by too much. Been busy begging for gigs…its hard out there now (not like it was easy before). Stupid economy.
But went to DragonCon this year (as a geek, you should have heard of it). Thought of you when I got a photo of a Mulder/Skully pair in costume. πŸ™‚

  16. Karen J Lloyd Post author

I have unfortunately not heard of DragonCon.

I’m really only an X-files geek.

Not so much a comic, gaming or dragon-esque kind of geek.

But Yay for that Mulder/Scully pair! πŸ™‚

  17. Aidan Casserly

Karen seems much more animated than any cartoon I’ve ever seen!

Nice suggestion with getting organized. One of these days I’m going to clean up my studio, preferably with a lighted match and a generous insurance policy…

  18. kasana

    OOOOOO !!!!
Congrats Karen. And please tell Cintiq guys to mention about OOOO sound in user’s manual.
And Xcuse for not posting a Video reply. πŸ˜€

  19. Karen J Lloyd Post author

    Thanks Kasana!

I’ll get right on that. πŸ™‚

I need my *own* video reply. I can’t believe how the time slips by. How long since I posted this? Gah.
